I think this is because 2-argument functions like
Math.atan2(y,x) can be described in the same manner.

BTW, I like more functions in Math module, such as
asin(), hypot(), etc, in the core distribution, 
although there is an extmath extention in
ftp://ftp.netlab.co.jp/pub/lang/ruby/contrib/
