I can only assume this got garbled in transmission, because I can't make 
heads or tails out of it. :( I certainly can't find anything in the 
royal.ged file that looks like that. Can you please clarify?

INDI is actually not the only case. Also FAM, SOUR, REPO, and SUBM. I'm 
sure there are others. Essentially, id's are given to any node that 
GEDCOM allows to be referenced, which includes things like individuals, 
families, source references, submitters, repositories, and so forth.

This looks great to me. In fact, I think it is pretty much what I 
proposed (although my example did not include examples of birth or 
title). Am I missing something?

If anyone is interested, I'd be happy to post my family GEDCOM file as 
another resource. It's about 7 megs in size (though it compresses 
nicely), with around 20,000 names, so it is much larger, and includes 
many more GEDCOM features than the royal.ged. Just let me know.
