   + ONIG_SYNTAX_RUBY
     (?m): dot(.) match newline

   + ONIG_SYNTAX_PERL and ONIG_SYNTAX_JAVA
     (?s): dot(.) match newline
     (?m): ^ match after newline, $ match before newline

Any idea why Ruby was chosen to behave differently from Perl here?
