I used darwinports, because it had the option to install 1.8.2+preview2. 
Fink only had 1.8.1, which has problems with ri/rdoc and ftp on osx.

For ruby libraries, I use rubygems (included in darwinports), or 
sometimes the ruby libraries in darwinports.
