Problem fixed, I think (let's hope this doesn't introduce new issues)

tempfile.rb:  add ObjectSpace.undefine_finalizer(self) at the end of
the unlink method.  It was a GC issue - just not mine (well, still
mine cause it messed with me...) :-)
