Hmm... I don't know what to tell you, just to test it out I rebuilt both the 1.8.1 from ports and the 1.8.2-preview2 tarball. Both worked fine. Rebuilding 1.8.2 worked just fine with the the standard ./configure && make. It doesn't appear that building 1.8.2 requires gmake.
