The 'undefined method' > error is the actual problem. If the gem command isn't complaining about the '-i' on the base gem command, then you are running an old version of gems. You need to upgrade to 0.8.1 and try again. (I would suggest upgrading by loading the rubygems tar or zip file and running "ruby install.rb".
