oof. I'm exactly opposite.  RedHat screwed up so many packages with 
their own patches that many applications failed to compile properly.
If it is a primary service of the server, I compile it by hand.  That 
way I know that it is installed the way the orignal authors designed it, 
and when I need to ask for help, they can actually help.
