That's a very, very old ri, and one that doesn't work with rdoc (as far 
as I remember). You need the ri out of a more recent Ruby distribution. 
That accepts a --doc-dir parameter, and honors the RI environment 
variable, which may be used to set defaults for arbitrary parameters.
