I guess it just depends on who the employer is.  If the employer is a 
biotech company they'll be quite happy to find a good programmer that has 
a 'side interest' in genetics, for example.  They would probably favor 
someone like that over another candidate who is a great programmer, but 
has no knowledge or interest in genetics.
