I looked at this list excitedly, only to be sorely disappointed. There is
not a single entry on this list that looks acceptable. Each server has one
or more serious problem, like: unreliable connectivity, new posts to that
server are not propogated, new posts to the list are not take very long time
to be received (multiple days), and so forth.

Google isn't a viable substitute. There is no way to keep track of read vs.
unread messages.
