nil.to_s == "" / nil.to_i == 0 / nil.to_f == 0.0 ですので，明示
的に変換してやれば今でも大丈夫です。

nil をいろいろなものと見なすのは止めた方がいいでしょう。Perl だ
と演算子から型を決められますが (undef + undef == 0, undef . undef == "")
Ruby で nil + nil は何になるの？とか。


それとは別にこんな変換メソッドがあってもいいかも。

class Object
  def to_bool; !nil?; end
end
class String
  def to_bool; !empty?; end
end
class Numeric
  def to_bool; self != 0; end
end
class IO
  def to_bool; !closed?; end
end
