原因がわかりました
rmで存在しないファイルを削除しようとするとNEXTSTEP3.3Jでは
% rm nofile
rm: nofile nonexistent
となりますがconfigureから呼び出されるconfig.guessの中で(X68対応)
以下が違いました
ここを元通りに修正すると以前同様コンパイルできるようになりました

その結果
ruby-1.0-971003[9]% ./configure
loading cache ./config.cache
checking host system type... rm: dummy.x nonexistent
configure: error: can not guess host type; you must specify one

でした
