と失敗するようになって気がついたのですが、File.expand_path は Pathname
を受け付けないようです。

% ./ruby -v -rpathname -e 'File.expand_path(Pathname.new("a"))'
ruby 1.9.0 (2005-09-18) [i686-linux]

これは意図的でしょうか?
