Don Knuth managed around similar problem with TeX versions converging
to Math::PI and METAFONT to Math::E, each new version adds one digit
-- 3, 3.1, 3.14, 3.141,...

He has numerical and ascii order, and still plenty of versions to go
(not that he releases often,   he's now at 3.141592)
