Initial Comment:
Currently the build/install process seems to build as much as it can and then install it properly.  The Ruby builder/installer is not notified that certain extension libraries were not built (or why not either).  If, at configure time, it is apparent that some extension libraries will not be built, it would be helpful to installers to be notified of that and why if possible (saves building everything to realize something is missing).  Even after building as much as possible, it would be nice to have a list of what was, and what was not built.
