It was an issue of ext/readline, and TypeError raises on recent
versions.

  $ ruby18 -v -S irb -rstringio
  ruby 1.8.5 (2006-07-26) [i686-linux]
  irb(main):001:0> $stdout = StringIO.new
  /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/irb/input-method.rb:97:in `readline': wrong argument type StringIO (expected File) (TypeError)
