I know but neither of these evaluation schemes guarantees that
( bdb["blue"] = "XYZ"') == bdb["blue"]

In fact, sometimes are are counting on bdb[]=(x,y) returning something
weird - like self.   That's what I meant by side effects.  You really 
have
no idea what's going to be returned.
