Would binding(n) be good enough? It's not very fancy, but seems like a 
natural extension of what is already there.

Thanks a *lot*! That *is* very reassuring.

So I'll just have to find another workaround that doesn't exploit an 
obscure Ruby bug until then... Oh well... :)
