Not sure if you guys want to close this issue or if it's an something worth looking into 

But removing the line 
  host: localhost
from the rails database.yml file solved the problem

production:
  adapter: postgresql
  encoding: utf8
  database: production
  pool: 5
  username: username
  password: userpass
  host: localhost
  min_messages: WARNING
