SunOS new-beat 5.8 Generic_117350-08 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-60
does not have shutdown and socketpair in libc,

gcc main.o libruby-static.a -ldl -lcrypt -lm   -o miniruby -g -O2    
Undefined                       first referenced
 symbol                             in file
socketpair                          libruby-static.a(io.o)
shutdown                            libruby-static.a(io.o)
ld: fatal: Symbol referencing errors. No output written to miniruby
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

they implemented instead in libsocket here is a patch that 
fixes linking...
