Is any work being done to speed up certain aspects of ruby? I was 
looking at "The Great Computer Language Shootout" yesterday and we are 
only barely trailing behind perl and python... Digging into more detail, 
there are some small benchmarks that look like they'd be easy to profile 
(ackermann's function for example) and might get us a nice little win.

I'm not a speed-freak myself, but I thought if we could tie perl & 
python, it would be one less reason for perlers not to take a look at us 
and possibly switch.
