Two other approaches to platform-specific constants: * Prefix the constant name with the platform name, e.g. File::LINUX_DIRECT, so as to clearly indicate that the code is not portable. * Define them as private constants (assuming that feature is approved) so that #const_get needs to be used in order to access them.
