What's even more freaky is that my second example can be "fixed" by 
inserting a GC.start after each iteration of the loop. The first one 
can't - growth slows down a lot, but it doesn't ever stop.

(In my program I need to use the control structure from my first 
example, so this doesn't help me much =))
