FTR, the idiom is also employed by core APIs such as ENV and MatchData:

>> ENV['TERM']
=> "xterm"
>> ENV[:TERM]
=> "xterm"
>> match = 'Finding a needle in a haystack'.match(/(?<needle>ne.+?e)/)
=> #<MatchData "needle" needle:"needle">
>> match['needle']
=> "needle"
>> match[:needle]
=> "needle"
