I just wanted to jump in and point out that this has, in fact, already been happening. JRuby has Git as its official repo at http://github.com/jruby/jruby , and MacRuby now has a Git repo that mirrors the core SVN repo at: git://git.macruby.org/macruby/MacRuby.git (see the message at: http://lists.macosforge.org/pipermail/macruby-devel/2009-August/002261.html for more information on that).
