Good work

Would there be chance to add = a nonblocking version (a default parameter may be) to constructors of TCPSo= cket, UDPSocket and UNIXSocket ?

something like: TCPSocke= t.connect_nonblock(xxxx, yyyy) # as a class method

Most libraries use TCPSocket or UNIXSocket rather than = Socket. So unless I patch the class inheritance chain (ugly! and lacks when= it comes to UNIXSocket) I have no hope of getting those to connect in a no= nblocking manner seamlessly.

Also, what is going on with the generational GC? I have= seen a lot of longlife_heap references and a write barrier function. The G= C profiler is reporting the same old behavior though. Any word if this woul= d be finished/enabled before 1.9.2?. Is there something that I need to do t= o enable it in the current trunk?

Hi,

Matz, ko1, shyouhei, akr, nobu, naruse and I held a meeting yesterday.
We decided a plan for Ruby 1.9.2.

=3D=3D Schedule
17 Jul (RubyKaigi2009)
=A0* releases a patch level release of the 1.9.1.
=A0* releases 1.9.2 preview release 1.
25 Aug
=A0* 1.9.2 preview release 2
25 Sep
=A0* 1.9.2 preview release 3
=A0* we aim to freeze the feature of 1.9.2 at the time.
25 Oct
=A0* 1.9.2 Release candidate 1
=A0* 1.9.2 will be in maintenance mode as 1.9.1 is now in.
25 Nov
=A0* 1.9.2 Release candidate 2
25 Dec
=A0* 1.9.2

=3D=3D New/Changed Features
Some libraries were improved/reimplemented.
* Socket
* Time
* pipe, pty and open3

see http://svn.ruby-lang.org/repos/ruby/trunk/NEWS for more detail.
=3D=3D=3D TODO
Some features need more discussions. We must decide detail of the
features by 25 Sep.
* Enumerable#gather
=A0* [ruby-dev:38392]
* Time#+ can accept a String as a rhs.
=A0* Do we need #to_rational in addition to #to_r ?
=A0* [ruby-core:23729]
=A0* assigned to akr and matz.
* Should the encoding for ENV be the locale encoding?
=A0* assigned to naruse.
* we need an option for IO methods which makes the methods skip BOMs.
=A0* [ruby-dev:37075]
=A0* assigned to naruse.
* Should we increase the version of Marshal format?
=A0* for "\u"
=A0* [ruby-dev:36750]
=A0* assigned to shyouhei and matz.

=3D=3D=3D If possible
I hope to include the following features into the 1.9.2. But they might
take too many time for deciding their specs and implementing them.
* SQLite as a standard library
=A0* [ruby-dev:38463]
=A0* assigned to naruse
* improvement of YARV opcode set.
=A0* assigned to ko1.
* debugger support
=A0* assigned to ko1
* profiler support
=A0* assigned to ko1
* dtrace support on FreeBSD, OpenSolaris and OSX.
=A0* assigned to yugui and ko1.

The features will be included in the 1.9.2 if they will be in time for
the feature freeze.
