Hello Roger,

This was reported while back by RubyInstaller team and fixed prior
1.8.6-p287 release.

Can you test out alt_system extension?

http://github.com/quix/alt_system/tree/master

And let's see the results, perhaps there is some clobbering over there
in Ruby itself.
