ruby -v: ruby-1.8.7-p160

I try to compile ruby 1.8.7-p160 on OpenSolaris snv_101b with CC using the following commands:

CC=cc ./configure --without-gcc && gmake

The build fails with this error:
line 4369: undefined symbol: O_RDONLY
cc: acomp failed for file.c
gmake: *** [
file.o] Error 2

Any ideas?
