ruby -v: ruby 1.8.7 (2008-08-11 patchlevel 72) [x86_64-linux]

This should output a DateTime class:
>> YAML::load(DateTime.parse("42-05-23").to_yaml).class
=> Time

The Timezone Information is lost in the Time class as well...
