I can't speak for merb, but the issue I'm seeing is:

ZenTest-4.0.0/bin/autotest

vs:

cucumber-0.1.16/lib/autotest/discover.rb

rubygems installs "bin" scripts with a gem wrapper:

>
> gem 'ZenTest', version
> load 'autotest'

Unfortunately, that directory structure is here to stay.
