From: James Lee Date: 2009-03-09T14:16:56+09:00 Subject: [ruby-core:22775] [Bug #1255] += for large strings egrigiously slow Issue #1255 has been updated by James Lee. Yes, I can change my code and use << myself. But a user that has not run into this problem would simply assume that the ruby interpreter is slow for string concatenation. Regardless of all of the above, I hope we can all agree that an unnecessary copy of a large amount of data is a waste of resources. If it can be determined that the copy is unnecessary in the place where memory management occurs, I think it makes more sense to make the decision there, than to push the decision up to the programmer. Moreover, a ruby programmer may never have written any C before. When reading the documentation on String#+, such a programmer would have no idea that "ConcatenationReturns a new String" really means O(n^2) if you put it in a loop. ---------------------------------------- http://redmine.ruby-lang.org/issues/show/1255 ---------------------------------------- http://redmine.ruby-lang.org
