The blogger talks about how using the subversion subset of git is safer if you are not familiar with git. But that's a tautology. Make some aliases In ~/.gitconfig, [alias] di = diff HEAD cm = commit -a That is the subversion subset within git. git di <=> svn diff git cm <=> svn commit There are solid reasons for the increased flexibility git provides via the index. Some are similar to the reasons perforce users scoff at subversion for not having changelists. I will not list them here, but believe me they arise from experience. It is entirely sensible to elect not to use the additional functionality git offers with the index cache -- to stick with the subversion subset instead. Really I wonder what the problem is. Those who still use svn locally are really missing out. Once you become accustomed to improving your local commits with rebase, it is impossible to look back.
