Hmm, I guess I didn't look at your numbers closely enough with my last
post. I'm still seeing all the same behaviour as Paul and can't seem
to duplicate the numbers you are showing us.

Was there a special way you built Ruby 1.9? My 1.9 is built with
mostly default options save a different install path:

./configure --prefix=/home/roelofs/bin/ruby19 --program-suffix=19
--with-baseruby=/usr/bin/ruby
