Running with -d revealed that the problem was due to having the Mac OS 
X firewall turned on; it was stopping the test from talking to the test 
server on a local port (not sure how to fix that yet). It would be nice 
if the tests would throw an error under such conditions instead of 
hanging, but the fix for now is to just turn off the firewall (I 
already have one protecting my network as a whole).
