OK,  I will upgrade autoconf.

I preformed:  " svn co http://svn.ruby-lang.org/repos/ruby/trunk 
/home/thornton/ruby_dev_1.9.0 "
Is some other action required to bring down standard libraries??  I 
would think it should come
down complete??  ---

I might be the autoconf problem --- I will fix that and try again.
