And how exactly?  Other than doing a slow try-compile, I don't see how 
can this be checked reliably across platforms.  I still have to check 
the signature of the function.

What I would really like to know first was the reason why version 
numbers were taken off ruby1.9, before really delving into adding hacks 
into my code.  It seems totally backwards to me to not keep version 
numbers anymore.
