Right, but that's a lot harder to uninstall.

   --prefix=/Users/dave/ruby19

puts the whole thing in a nice sandbox in my home directory. To  
remove it, simply rm -rf.  I can also try stuff on different versions  
of Ruby by changing paths, rather than changing shell scripts etc.
