I confess to only skimming this general topic (this thread and others)
but I had gotten the idea that one purpose in adding rubygems to the
core distro was to make it easier to unbundle other std-lib items.

Seems that allowing these libs to evolve and update independent of
full Ruby releases seems a better path, especially if getting these
updates is a 10-character command-line invocation.
