So let's try to be constructive. Ruby doesn't exist to make a Debian maintainer's life easier. If Debian (or SUSE or RedHat or Solaris) maintainers don't want to use Ruby in the way that it configures itself (which is entirely sane), that's their choice. They (the maintainers) can ask for additional options (e.g., VENDOR_HOME has been suggested), but certainly shouldn't expect that Ruby maintainers will go out of their way to deal with their corner case issue.
