I doubt the Ruby trunk will build on VMS. There is a VMS port in  
progress, though [0]. You'll want to get in touch with the people  
running that, since they're probably the only ones who will be able  
to help you. It's been a year or two since I tried to use Ruby on  
VMS, so I don't know what the current status of the port is, but it  
was at least compiling and running on my Alphas back then.
