I've tried running the program under ptrace.  It appears that when the
original program runs properly each pipe read()s like:
    "424242..."
    "424242..."
    ...
    "424242..."
    "\n"
    ""
    close()

When the program hangs, at least one pipe read()s like:
    "424242..."
    "424242..."
    ...
    "424242..."
    "\n"
    select() <- hung
