Initial Comment:
After installing Ruby 1.8.5 via the one-click install, my system PATH was set to "c:\ruby\bin".  That's it.  There were quite a few entries on my path before then including doubtless several with spaces or quotes.  So it would seem that the installer choked on at least one of them...

I'm afraid I can't provide much more guidance on the issue since I do not have a copy of the exact contents of my paths prior to the installation.
